We will hold simultaneous small-group sessions on a self-organized basis around topics of interest to the community: redesigning the TTC’s website, creating and selling user-generated media and articles (music, buttons, t-shirts), photography and illustration and music inspired by the TTC.
This celebration and workshop-oriented event is intended to inspire a fresh approach at the TTC in how it serves users and engages with community in order to achieve its organizational goals.
This is my favourite part.
Toronto Transit Camp is not a complaints department, it is a solution playground.
On Thursday, November 23, 2006 the Toronto .net Users Group held a session on search in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

As one of the major focus areas for Microsoft, competing with Google in the enterprise space is taking centre stage. Not only will Office SharePoint Server 2007 launch with an optional, cost-effective “search only†SKU, the company is also launching an upgrade to its Windows Desktop Search that searches the user’s desktop, the Internet and any intranet indexes using SharePoint’s indexer. We’ll look at the different components of this strategy and examine some of the architectural opportunities opened up by them.

I recorded his presentation and have videos posted below
There has been a great deal of hullabaloo lately about WriteRoom by Hog Bay Software. Here is how the publisher describes it.
For Mac users who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter, but live in the digital world. WriteRoom is a full-screen, distraction-free writing environment. Unlike the cluttered word processors you’re used to, WriteRoom is just about you and your text.
Lifehacker likes it, Factory Joe talks about it, and 43 folders… well acknowledges it. I can’t find many people who hate it and I myself think that the idea of distraction free writing is a great one.
There has been cloned versions made; DarkRoom for Windows with the .NET framework and JDarkRoom for computers running Java.
I’m not really interested in installing more software on my computer so i decided to see what i could do by tweaking Word 2007. I could have used UltraEdit or possibly even OneNote 2007 but I thought that Word would be the easiest because I could create a template instead of changing my preferences.
This is what I came up with.
Continue reading for instructions how how to set it up. Obviously you’ll need Word 2007 to do this.
So I’m in Ali-baba the other day which is a local falafel and shawarma joint which I have been going to for eight years. I get the falafel, that jerk Bryce gets the shawarma just to ruffle my feathers… Savage.
Anyway so I’m in there the other day and there is this guy ahead of me in line and he keeps telling the people behind the counter that if they hook him up right he will put their restaurant on his website. He says this over-and-over again while the staff tries to get his order together. He also says that he will leave a stack of cards at the cash, you know so people buying taboli can get the URL of this guys site so that they can see the Ali-Baba endorsement this guy is promising. The power of the Internet is more hummus.
So I just finished doing some mandatory e-learning for a new project I am working on for a large enterprise. (Seriously just finished… I’m writing this in notepad) The topic was Information Security and it was honestly really interesting… as I did it I could not stop thinking about how Enterprise 2.0 will tackle the issues of securing an organizations’ information.
These concerns will have to be addressed for wide adoption of social software on the Enterprise; I’m not going to even get into Software as a Service (SaaS) because honestly that is a whole other conversation.
Large corporations need to keep their information secure to earn and maintain the trust of customers, regulators and business partners.
The issue is though that information needs to be available and easy to access when it is needed. As a third stage Guild Navigator says, “the spice must flow†:-P
A companies employees, customers, and business associates frequently use information on the enterprise to conduct their business. If access to relevant information and systems were interrupted, they would be unable to conduct their business properly.
I once talked to a team that was working on an extranet for an institutions board of directors. So while this was a simple information sharing extranet they had INSANE security requirements. Each board member had to remember 3 unique login credentials: one for access to the network, one for the extranet, and one for the document level security on the encrypted files.
So the problem was that this information was extremely sensitive and needed to be protected but board members had difficulty using the system because they had to remember three sets of login information and it was not like they were accessing the extranet every day. The board members said that the system was too hard to use so the team had to address this while ensuring that the corporations information remained secret. We went through many scenarios and technologies to try to solve this difficult problem and I left before the project really went anywhere.
Making sensitive information available while at the same time protecting it from unauthorized access and inappropriate disclosure is, of course, a delicate balancing act. The basic idea is to give authorized individuals access to the premises, systems and information they need, while keeping the unauthorized people out. These are difficult issues and one that the enterprise 2.0 community will deal with soon, but it will be a rough ride. — I’m looking at you Vista ;-) which isn’t really enterprise 2.0 but a upcoming thorn in my side.

Oh I found this in my training and I found it kinda funny in a Lord Nikon, Angelina Jolie kinda way. From Social Software to Social Engineering
Social engineering – what is it?
Social engineering is the process of getting sensitive information, such as passwords, access rights and other sensitive information, by tricking employees.
Social engineers will use many different ways to get sensitive information from you. The best way to defend against social engineering is to ensure that you can recognize potential threats when they are happening and know how to deal with them.
